AIM Lite
"We are still cooking up some ideas so check back often for updates."

January 2nd, 2008 - 4:00PM ESTHappy New Year!

A special treat for Mac users: The AIM Lite team has been hard at work on various different projects, and we're proud to announce a preview version of our favorite -- AIM.app.

Download AIM.app for Mac!

AIM.app is built around the OpenAIM SDK. We use AIM.app for testing new features just like AIM Lite and wanted to share it with the rest of our community. If you'd like to find out more about AIM Developer tools, try the OpenAIM website.

AIM.app is made for Mac users, by Mac users, and we think you are all going to like it. This is the first public release of the client -- but for those Mac developers out there you can see old versions in source at the OpenAIM developer website here. You can also see full release notes here.

AIM.app also supports plugins! Try out KidIM, which allows parents to setup a simple IM environment for kids. Try that out here

As always, we thrive on feedback. Just like in the windows version of AIM Lite, please send us feedback via the AIM.app Help menu.

Happy IMing and happy new year!

August 21st, 2007 - 12:20PM ESTAll quiet here...

I promise, the AIM Lite team still exists, but we think laim is so cool we decided to stop working on it!

just kidding! :-)

We are still hard at work, but we are working on a particular new feature that is going to take some time to make it outside of AIM. We can't wait to have you all test it out and send us feedback, but give us some time to work out the details.

Based on the recent feedback from the 'WTF?' button there aren't too many 'MUST HAVE NOW' features, besides chat, so we don't expect too many changes to AIM Lite for the next release (besides this super cool new feature).

If there are some 'must haves', send us feedback as soon as possible so we can get those features in.

As always, keep the feedback coming!

June 8th, 2007 - 4:35PM ESTv0.33 Released - Font Support

There are a few other minor changes, but nothing too noticable. The big difference is font support. You can set a default font in the preferences window, or set fonts inline with ctrl-f. We also supprt the normal ctrl-b/i/u and ctrl-9 (decrease font) and ctrl-0 (increase font)

Check out the updated preferences window:

And, of course, rich text:

The rest of the changes are minor (the mail icon works, single sign on for setting up linked accounts and mobile forwarding, etc)

Enjoy!
ps: I think we squashed the bug where online buddies would show up offline... let us know if you still see this!

June 5th, 2007 - 5:16PM ESTSSssshhhh!

Don't tell anyone, but I just got font support into laim ;)

Allow me some time to bug check and clean up a few other features, but I should be able to do a font release in a week tops.

May 7th, 2007 - 2:21PM ESTWhat gives?!?!

Ok, here's the scoop. We've all been away or otherwise detained for the past three weeks, so it's just been today that we've started reading ‘WTF?’ comments and going through our backlog of work. What have we been up to?
Well, some of that is super-top-secret work that is not really related to LAIM. Some of us were on vacation ^_^, and some of us were working on this. Come check it out! If you use AIM 6 or AIM Lite and use itunes, I recommend you try it out with your friends

Back to AIM Lite, what's the status? Well, everyone wanted saved away messages, and it's clear the way we implemented it was not ideal. We are working on a better way to manage your messages (that includes only saving the ones you like and deleting the ones you don't). We also keep pushing for font support, but at this point the Boxely team is swamped with other work and AIM Lite isn't going to be the one to push that team over the edge. They are overworked as it is ;)

So, sit tight, we don't want to do another release without fonts and we may have to wait a few weeks before that's available. In the meantime we are going over bug fixes (squashed the bug putting online people in the offline group) and trying to track down some of the other bugs that we have created since then.

By the way, there have been a number of comments about changes in our profile methods. We now store profiles on the host. That means if you have multiple clients running, host will ignore some of those clients locally saved profiles. It creates the inverse of the issue it fixed, where if you had multiple clients with different saved profiles, the last logged in overwrote the current profile. It’s an improvement, but I understand some of the complaints.

Lastly, for the time being, if you want to delete some of your stored away messages, they are stored here. The file is pretty self explanatory:

C:\Documents and Settings\OS Username\Application Data\LAIM\screenname.txt

That’s all for now. Keep the ‘WTF?’ comments coming. They really are anonymous, but if you add your email address to the comment we do respond – even though it might take us three weeks ;)

March 27th, 2007 - 2:30PM ESTv0.32 Released

What's New, you ask?
-- Better Direct IM support (sending and receiving images w/ drag and drop)
-- Buddy Icon support (drag and drop to profile window)
-- Save custom away messages
-- Privacy support

Ok, we know we said there would be font support. We apologize, but we weren't able to get it into this release. Hopefully will try to get that in for next release.

There are a bunch of other minor changes we've made too, check them out here.

Goals for the next release are chat windows, single sign on support, images in profiles, smilies and, *drum roll please...* font support. ^_^

March 22th, 2007 - 2:30PM ESTVersion 0.32 Next Week

Ok, bad news. We don't want to make you wait any longer for another release. Unfortunately, the tools we need for better text control: font, size, etc, are not available yet. So, early next week we will do a release with a number of new features and bug fixes. Then, once we get an updated Boxely with better font support, we will release yet another version of AIM Lite with font support.

Stay Tuned...

March 7th, 2007 - 11:00AM ESTWhere's the update?

We haven't released a new version yet because we promised you font/color/size support. Don't worry, you won't know it's there if you don't want it, but it is by far the #1 request. Making sure it doesn't impact performance was the part that is taking a little while. The support is coming, but it's going to be part of Boxely core, so AIM Lite dev is taking a back seat... Hopefully a week or two and it'll be ready.

A couple notes:
-- If you are seeing crashes and you are using the toaster plugin, disable it. It looks like there is a Boxely crash. It will be fixed in the next release, and you won't need a new toaster plugin
--- If you are seeing sign on errors and you start laim with your computer, and are connected to a wireless network, never fear, it will likely be fixed in the next release. Just sign on again when your wireless connection connects and you'll be fine.

January 25th, 2007 - 4:50PM ESTJanuary Update, Feature Requests

Hello everyone. We’ve been all over the place these past few weeks and wanted to give you an update on what we are working on and what to expect over the next few releases. We ARE listening to your requests; here are some of the most popular:
-- Save away messages, better away msg handling in general
-- Fonts, fonts and more fonts
-- Privacy settings,
-- Better dim, file transfer, etc
-- More themes, more plugins

We can’t promise you that all these features will get into the next release, but we will get to them.

AIM Lite may be the coolest thing to happen to AIM since profiles and smarterchild, but internally we use it as a reference application. That means as we develop new things within AIM, we try to test out things on AIM Lite. That doesn’t mean we have to ship any of these new things with AIM Lite, but the ones that are cool definitely do ship. In the end that means a meaner, leaner, sweeter, AIM Lite.

Bear with us while we juggle everything. We love to hear all the feedback, the good and the bad. Keep spreading the word, and we’ll keep new releases coming.
-- The AIM Lite team.

ps: Plugin/Theme Install Issues: There was a problem, now fixed, with themes and plugins being downloaded as .zip files instead of their proper filenames. If you downloaded a theme the file extension should be .ath. For plugins, the extension is .awi

December 11th, 2006 - 4:00PM ESTv0.31 Released

The big features for this release are profile support, plugins and theming. Keep the WTF? comments pouring in, we are listening. A more complete list of of changes is available here, highlights include:
-- Messaging while away
-- Auto expanding input field
-- Offline IMs
-- Better state change indication
There are a few sample themes and plugins, but we need YOU to help come up new ones. Our architecture will evolve based on what you want to do, so try it out and let us know what you think!
